PAN Card After Someone’s Death?
A PAN card is crucial for filing income tax returns (ITR) as it links with your bank accounts and Demat account. After someone’s death, it is essential to deactivate their PAN card to prevent potential misuse. If the PAN card falls into the wrong hands, it could lead to significant problems.
What You Should Do:
- If the PAN card is no longer needed, it should be deactivated.
- To deactivate the PAN card, the deceased family members must contact the Income Tax Department.
- Before deactivating the PAN, ensure that all bank accounts in the deceased person’s name are closed or transferred to someone else.
Aadhaar Card After Someone’s Death?
Currently, there is no official mechanism to cancel or deactivate an Aadhaar card after death. Therefore, it is the family’s responsibility to safeguard the Aadhaar card to avoid misuse.
What You Should Do:
- If the deceased was availing of any government schemes or subsidies linked to Aadhaar, inform the relevant department to stop the benefits and remove their name from the program.
- To prevent misuse, the Aadhaar card can be locked using the M-Aadhaar app or through the UIDAI website. This also helps secure the deceased’s mobile number from unauthorized use.
Voter ID Card After Someone’s Death?
It is important to cancel the Voter ID of a deceased person to prevent fraudulent voting.
What You Should Do:
- To cancel the Voter ID, fill out Form 7 at the local election office.
- Once the form is processed, the Voter ID will be deactivated.
Handling the documents of a deceased person responsibly is essential to avoid legal and administrative challenges. Deactivating or securing important identification documents like PAN, Aadhaar, and Voter ID ensures they are not misused.
